139 – ʿAbdallāh narrated to us; Nasr ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn Sulaym narrated to us, from Jābir ibn Yazīd. Sanayān the oil-seller related to us, from al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, from Anas ibn Mālik:
The Prophet ﷺ sent word to a Jewish man asking to borrow something on deferred terms. The Jew replied, “Does Muḥammad even have the means to repay?” I went to the Prophet ﷺ and reported this to him. He said, “The Jew has lied”—and he repeated it three times—“I am the best of those who honor their transactions”—again repeating it three times. Then he added, “For a man to wear a garment pieced together from various patches is better for him than to accept, in trust, something that is not in his possession.”
