Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wahhab narrated to us; from Ishaq; from Mutarrif, who said:

“I reflected on what constitutes the sum of all goodness, and I found that goodness is abundant—fasting and prayer. Yet all of that lies in the Hand of Allah—glorified and exalted is He—and you have no power over what is in the Hand of Allah—glorified and exalted is He—except that you ask Him and He grants it to you. Therefore, the sum of all goodness is supplication.”
