- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Mahdi ibn Maymun, from Ghaylan, from Mutarrif, who said: “Had Allah willed to cause us to die out of awe for Him, we would have been the most deserving of it. Yet I know that my Lord—Exalted be He—is satisfied with less than that from me.”
Ghaylan added: “He used to wear maṭārif (sumptuous cloaks) and ride horses, and whenever I came to him it was a delight to my eyes.”
