Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

137 – ʿAbdallāh narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Hamdānī, narrated to us; Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth narrated to us, from Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, from Ḥarb ibn Abī al-Aswad, from Ṭalḥah—meaning the Basran Ṭalḥah, not Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh—who said:

“I arrived in Madinah with no one there who knew me—he also said: with no sponsor—and an allowance of a mudd of dates shared between every two of us was being given. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in a prayer, whereupon a voice called out from behind him: ‘O Messenger of Allah, the dates have burned our stomachs and our sandals have worn through!’

So he delivered a sermon, praised Allah and extolled Him, and said: ‘By Allah, if I had meat and bread to give you, I would certainly feed them to you. Yet a time will surely come upon you when trays will be set before each one of you morning and evening, and you will wear garments like the curtains of the Kaʿbah.’

They asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, are we better today or on that day?’ He replied, ‘You are better today than you will be on that day—you are better today than you will be on that day—when some of you will be striking the necks of others.’
