Khulaid al-ʿAsarī used to perform the fajr (dawn) prayer in the gathering place of his people, and then he would remember Allah until the sun rose. After that he would have his house made ready—everything set in order and two cushions placed for him—then he would close his door and say: “Welcome, O angels of my Lord! By Allah, I shall surely have you bear witness today to some good that I offer from myself. Take, in the name of Allah: subḥān Allah (Glory be to Allah), al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise belongs to Allah), lā ilāha illā Allah (there is no deity but Allah), Allāhu akbar (Allah is the Greatest).” He would remain like that until drowsiness overcame him or he went out for the prayer.
