1304 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Wakiʿ narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Abu Hayyan, from Abu Zinbaʿ, who said:
A young man was walking with al-Aḥnaf ibn Qays. When they passed by al-Aḥnaf’s house, the young man invited him in. Al-Aḥnaf said, “My nephew, perhaps you are one of the ʿāriḍūn (those who want to be praised).” The young man asked, “Abu Baḥr, who are the ʿāriḍūn?” He replied, “They are the people who love to be commended for what they have not done. My nephew, whenever the truth presents itself to you, pursue it straightway and turn away from everything else.”
