Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1289 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Wahb ibn Jarir narrated to us; and his father narrated to us. He said: I heard Humayd ibn Hilal say:

Harim ibn Ḥayyān and ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmir set out for the pilgrimage. While they were travelling, a ṣilliyānah (a desert shrub) came into view of their mounts; both animals rushed toward it, and one of them consumed it. Harim said to Ibn ʿAmir, “Would you like to be that ṣilliyānah—eaten by this beast and gone?” He replied, “No, by Allah. I hope for Allah’s mercy—I hope, I hope.” Harim responded, “But by Allah, I would love to be that ṣilliyānah: that this beast had eaten me and I had disappeared, so that I would be nothing at all.”
