Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1286 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Ahmad ibn Ibrahim narrated to us; Ibrahim ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us; Yahya ibn al-Muẓaffar told me; Jaʿfar ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Malik ibn Dinar, who said:

“Harim ibn Hayyan was once appointed to an official post. Expecting that his people would soon come to visit him, he ordered a fire to be kindled between himself and anyone who might approach. His people arrived and greeted him from afar.

He said, ‘Welcome, my people—come closer.’

They replied, ‘By Allah, we cannot come near you; the fire stands between us and you.’

He said, ‘So you would have me thrown into a fire greater than this—into the Fire of ⦗189⦘ Hell?’

Thereupon they turned back.”
