“We were travelling back from Khurasan in the company of Hārim b. Hayyan. While we were on the road, in the pre-dawn hours (sahar), I happened to recite a line of poetry. Hārim thereupon raised his whip and struck me once across the back—a lash that made me double over. He said to me, ‘At this very hour, when the Most Merciful descends and supplications are granted, you occupy yourself with poetry?’
ʿAbd al-Samad added: ‘It is the hour when supplications are answered and mercy descends.’"}
