Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Ibn Abī Ziyād Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān told us; Sayyār—meaning Ibn Ḥātim—relayed to us, from Jaʿfar, from Thābit, from Anas ibn Mālik who said:

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited a young man who was in the throes of death and asked, “How do you find yourself?” He answered, “I place my hope in Allah, yet I fear my sins.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “These two feelings never unite in the heart of a servant, at a moment like this, without Allah granting him what he hopes for and keeping him safe from what he fears.”
