1277 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Siyyar narrated to us; Jaʿfar narrated to us, on the authority of Matar al-Warrāq, who said:
Harim al-ʿAbdi once spent the night with Hummama, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Hummama spent the whole night weeping until dawn. When morning came, Harim said to him, “O Hummama, what made you weep?” He replied, “I was thinking of a night whose morning will see the graves thrown open and those inside them brought forth.”
On another occasion Hummama spent the night with Harim, and Harim wept throughout the night until daybreak. When dawn arrived, Hummama asked him, “What was it that made you weep?” He said, “I thought of a night whose morning will witness the stars of heaven scattered, and that caused me to weep.”
Sometimes, during the day, the two would go out together. They would visit the perfumers’ market (sūq al-rayḥān), ask Allah for al-Jannah (Paradise) and make supplication, then proceed to the blacksmiths’ quarter, seek refuge from al-nār (the Fire), and finally part ways to return to their respective homes.
