1263 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us. He said, “I read this report to my father.” Muhammad ibn Musʿab narrated to us, saying: “I heard Makhlad ibn Husayn relate, on the authority of Hisham, that Jarīyah ibn Qudāmah came to ʿĀmir while he was praying. He asked permission at the door of the house, so ʿĀmir stepped aside and Jarīyah went in and sat down. He saw nothing in the house except a single qullah (earthen water jar), while ʿĀmir—clad in a burnus (hooded cloak)—was standing in prayer. When ʿĀmir concluded the prayer, Jarīyah said to him, ‘O ʿĀmir, have you really contented yourself in this world with what I see? You have indeed accepted very little of it.’ ʿĀmir replied, ‘By Allah, it is you and your companions who have been content with little of it.’ Then he rose and resumed his prayer.”
