Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1254 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿUbayd Allah ibn Muhammad narrated to us; a shaykh known by the kunyah Abū Zakariyyā, a client of the Quraysh, narrated to me from some of his own teachers, who said:

A paternal cousin of ʿĀmir named ʿAbdah used to watch what he did with himself. She would prepare a dish of tharīd (bread soaked in broth) for him and bring it to him, but he would go out to the orphans of the neighbourhood and invite them to eat. She would say, “I made it for you with my own two hands so that you would eat it!” He would answer, “Was your only intention not to benefit me?” He also used to say to her, “O ʿUbaydah, seek consolation in the Qur’an against the lure of this world, for whoever does not console himself with the Qur’an regarding this world will have his soul torn apart by endless regrets over it.”
