1250 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAdī narrated to us, from Ḥumayd, from Muwarraq al-ʿAjlī, from Jāriyah ibn Qudāmah, who said:
“I travelled to al-Shām and came upon ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd as he was sitting in the mosque, so I sat down with him. With him was a companion whom I did not recognize. I said to him, ‘I would love to meet Kaʿb.’ He asked, ‘For what reason?’ I replied, ‘Because I was told that he said: “No one comes to this mosque—meaning Bayt al-Maqdis—seeking nothing but to pray in it except that he returns as free of sin as on the day his mother bore him.”’ ʿĀmir said, ‘The man sitting with you is Kaʿb.’
Kaʿb then said, ‘Night is no longer night, nor is day truly day; it was never meant to be so. One ʿumrah (minor pilgrimage) is better than two acts of sanctification, and one ḥajj is better than two ʿumrahs. Moreover, whenever a servant rises in the night, performs wuduʾ well, prays two rakʿahs (units of prayer), and asks Allah for forgiveness, he is forgiven.’
