- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Abu Hammām al-Walīd ibn Shujāʿ narrated to us; Ibn Wahb informed me; ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥāriṯ informed me that Abū al-Naḍr related to him, from Sulaymān ibn Yasār, from ʿĀʾishah, the Prophet’s wife ﷺ, who said:
“I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laugh so fully that I could see the back of his throat; he would only smile.”
She added: “Whenever he saw a cloud or felt a wind, it showed on his face. So I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, when people see a cloud they rejoice, hoping it will bring rain, yet when you see it I notice displeasure on your face.’ He replied: ‘O ʿĀʾishah, what assurance do I have that it might not contain punishment? A people were indeed punished by the wind, and another people, on seeing the chastisement approaching, said, “This is but a cloud that will bring us rain” (al-Aḥqāf 46:24).’”
