- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Sufyān narrated, saying: “The very first time palanquins were introduced was during the governorship of al-Ḥajjāj. I once accompanied my mother when she set out for Hajj, and at al-Qādisiyyah I did not see a single palanquin—people were riding only on their saddles.” Sufyān also said, “It used to be said: ‘The pilgrimage of the righteous is on saddles.’”
