Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿAmr ibn ʿĀṣim narrated to us; Ḥabīb ibn Abī al-ʿAnbarī narrated to me; Salamah ibn Ādam, the nephew of ʿĀmir, narrated:

“The daughter of ʿĀmir’s brother baked a small round loaf moistened with milk for him. She said, ‘I brought it to him so that he might break his fast with it.’ Just then a beggar was calling out, ‘Who will feed a starving soul?’ ʿĀmir said, ‘My niece, does this not belong to me, to dispose of as I wish?’ She replied, ‘Certainly.’ So he handed it to the beggar.

“The girl was distressed, whereupon he said, ‘Bring, bring!’ She returned with some dates and a piece of bread. He ate and drank some water. Then he said, ‘My niece, this belly is nothing but a container; whatever you cram into it merely fills it, while what you send on ahead remains stored up for you.’”}
