1231 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from al-ʿAlaʾ ibn Salim. He said: A man who had kept company with ʿAmir ibn ʿAbd al-Qays for four months told me: “I never saw him sleep—neither by night nor by day—until the day I parted from him. He kept two small loaves on which he had spread fat; with one he would take his pre-dawn meal (suḥūr) and with the other he would break the fast. At daybreak he would teach us the Quran, and when the time for the obligatory prayer arrived he would rise and pray, continuing in prayer until the ʿAsr prayer. Then he would teach us the Quran again, and once he had performed the Maghrib prayer he would say, ‘The night is now his,’ and he would remain engaged in worship until dawn.”}
