Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1229 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Yunus narrated to us; Salih narrated to us; Saʿid al-Rabiʿi narrated, that ʿAmir ibn ʿAbd al-Qays used to say:

“If al-yaqīn (absolute certainty) were to reach me while I am still alive in this world that I am among the people of the Fire, my soul would never rest content to let itself perish—ever. Rather, I would worship Allah—exalted is He—with the utmost devotion, and strive with every possible effort, so that, were I to be destroyed after such striving, I would at least have a stronger plea for my soul.”
