1220 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said, “I was informed by Sayyār. ʿAbd Allah ibn Shumayṭ narrated to us and said: I heard my father say:
‘One of them will deliberately set about reciting the Quran and pursuing knowledge. Yet once he has learned, he takes hold of the life of this world, presses it to his chest, and lifts it upon his head. Three weak people then observe him: a frail woman, an ignorant Bedouin, and a non-Arab. They say, “This man must have more knowledge of Allah than we do; had he not seen some store of gain in the world, he would never have acted like this.” So they grow eager for the world and begin to amass it.
My father used to say: His likeness is that of the one of whom Allah – Exalted is He – says, ‘…and they shall bear, in addition to their own loads, a share of the burdens of those whom they mislead without knowledge.’ (al-Nahl 16:25).’
