Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1211 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Abu Bakr narrated to us; Sharik narrated to us, from ʿUmārah ibn al-Qaʿqāʿ and Ibn Shubruma, from Abu Zurʿah, from Abu Hurayrah who said: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Messenger of Allah, tell me who among people has the greatest right to my good companionship.” He replied, “Indeed—yes, by your father, you shall be informed: your mother.” The man asked, “Then who?” He said, “Your mother.” He asked, “Then who?” He said, “Your mother.” He asked once more, “Then who?” He said, “Your father.”

The man then said, “Inform me, Messenger of Allah, about my property—how should I give charity from it?” He answered, “Indeed, by Allah, you shall be informed: give charity while you are healthy and tight-fisted, hoping to live on and fearing poverty. Do not delay until, when your soul has reached here”—and he pointed to his throat—“you say, ‘My wealth is for so-and-so, and my wealth is for so-and-so,’ for it will already belong to them, though you were reluctant.”
