1160 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Muhammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; ʿAwf related to me, from Abu ⦗171⦘ al-Silil, who said:

I used to accompany Ṣilah ibn Ashyam in order to learn from him. One day I said to him, “Teach me something—entrust me with a precept, give me some advice.”

He replied, “Certainly. Let the Book of Allah be your trusted counsellor, be sincere toward the Muslims, and devote yourself abundantly to calling upon Allah—exalted is He. But beware! Do not let the supplication of the masses destroy you, do not end up a victim beaten to death with sticks, and keep away from a people who claim to possess a level of faith superior to that of the believers.”

I asked, “Who are they?” He answered, “They are this vile Ḥarūriyyah (Kharijite faction).”
