1155 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿAffān narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, informed by Thābit al-Bunānī that Ṣilah ibn Ashyam was once on a military expedition, accompanied by a son of his. He said, “My dear son, step forward and fight so that I may seek my reward through you.” The young man charged, fought, and was killed—may Allah have mercy on him. Ṣilah then advanced and was himself killed. When the women gathered around his wife, Muʿādhah al-ʿAdawiyyah, she said, “Welcome—if you have come to congratulate me, then you are welcome; but if you have come for anything else, go back.”
