Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1142 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us; al-Mubārak narrated to us; from Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Muzanī; from ʿAdī ibn Arṭāʾah; from a man who had been one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the earliest years of this ummah, a man distinguished by the following practice: whenever he was praised or lauded and came to hear of it, he would say, “Allahumma lā tuʾākhidhnī bimā yaqūlūn, waghfir lī mā lā yaʿlamūn (O Allah, do not call me to account for what they say, and forgive me for what they do not know).”
