1140 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Abu Saʿid, the freedman of Banu Hashim, narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Umm Bakr narrated to us. She said:
Al-Miswar ibn Makhrama hoarded a large quantity of food. When he saw the autumn clouds gathering, he disliked what he had done and exclaimed, “See how I have come to dislike something that benefits the Muslims! Whoever comes to me may take it at exactly the price for which I acquired it.” Word of this reached ʿUmar (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said, “Can al-Miswar not take any profit at all?”
So al-Miswar went to ʿUmar and said, “O Commander of the Believers, I ⦗168⦘ have stockpiled a great amount of food. Then clouds formed and I found the matter distasteful, so I swore that I would make no profit on it.” ʿUmar replied, “May Allah reward you with goodness.”
