1134 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: I read this hadith to my father. Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Abzā narrated to me; Mubārak narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan, that ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ was once at a funeral. He came upon a sunken grave, and there was a man from his own family standing nearby. ʿUthmān said, “Come here, So-and-so.” When the man approached, he told him, “Look at your house.” The narrator continues: I saw it— a narrow, dry, dark dwelling in which there was no food, no drink, and no wife. ʿUthmān said, “By Allah, that is your home.” The man replied, “By Allah, you have spoken the truth. If only I could go back, I would carry provisions from that life to this one.”
