1126 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Bahz ibn Asad narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us; Qatādah said: I heard Yūnus ibn Jubayr say:
We accompanied Jundub ibn ʿAbd Allah, and when we reached Ḥiṣn al-Mukātib we said to him, “Give us some advice.” He replied:
“I counsel you to fear Allah and to cling to the Quran, for it is the light of the dark night and the guidance of the day. Put it into practice to the utmost of your ability, whether in toil or in need. If a calamity strikes, surrender your wealth before your life; and if the calamity presses further, then surrender both your wealth and your life before you surrender your religion. For the truly dispossessed is the one whose religion is assailed, and the truly robbed is the one whose religion is taken away. Indeed, there is no affluence after the Fire and no poverty after Paradise; in Hell its captives are never released, nor will its destitute ever become self-sufficient.”
