1116 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us, from al-Muthannā ibn Saʿīd, from Ṭalḥah ibn Nāfiʿ, who said:
Ibn al-Zubayr once addressed us and said: “We have been put to the test in your matter with the very trial you know about. Whatever we command you that entails obedience to Allah, glorified is He, then you must listen and obey. But whatever we command you that does not constitute obedience to Allah—Exalted is He—then no obedience is due to us in it, nor would it please us in the least.”
١١١٦ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنِ الْمُثَنَّى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ نَافِعٍ قَالَ: خَطَبَنَا ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ: إِنَّا قَدِ ابْتُلِينَا بِالَّذِي قَدِ ابْتُلِينَا بِهِ مِنْ أَمْرِكُمْ فَمَا أَمَرْنَاكُمْ مِنْ أَمْرٍ فِيهِ طَاعَةٌ لِلَّهِ سُبْحَانَهُ، فَلَنَا عَلَيْكُمْ فِيهِ السَّمْعُ وَالطَّاعَةُ، وَمَا أَمَرْنَاكُمْ بِهِ مِنْ أَمْرٍ لَيْسَ فِيهِ طَاعَةٌ لِلَّهِ – Exalté soit-Il – فَلَا طَاعَةَ لَنَا فِيهِ وَلَا نِعْمَةَ عَيْنٍ "
