1098 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Abu Saʿid, the freedman of Banu Hashim, narrated to us; Ishaq ibn ʿUthman Abu Yaʿqub narrated to us; Abu Ayyub narrated:
“There was a man who used to preach in this mosque named al-Aswad ibn Sariʿ. Abu Musa (may Allah have mercy on him) heard the sound of their voices, so he rose to go to them. The strap of his sandal snapped, whereupon he said, ‘Inna lillahi wa-inna ilayhi rajiʿun (Surely we belong to Allah and to Him we return). My sandal-strap did not break except because of a sin.’ A man handed him another strap, so he said, ‘May Allah carry you and keep you connected just as you have carried your brother.’
“When he reached them he said, ‘Weep! For the people of Hell weep, yet their weeping is shown no mercy. So weep today, for the tears you shed today will be shown mercy.’”
