Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1088 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Saʿid al-Qattan narrated to us; Ibn Abi Hazim narrated to me, from his father, from Sahl ibn Saʿd, who said:

“We used to look forward to the coming of Friday.” I asked, “Why was that?” He replied, “There was an old woman of ours who would take some of this silq (chard), crush it together with barley, and we would eat from it. We would not take lunch, nor our midday rest, until after the Friday prayer.”

1089 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us. He said: “This is a document my father wrote to me in his own hand for times of fazaʿ (panic), and I have copied it here:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful:

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah—words which neither the righteous nor the wicked can surpass—from the evil of what descends from the sky, from the evil of what ascends therein, from the evil of what He has created in the earth, from the evil of what emerges from it, from the evil of the trials of night and day, and from the evil of every visitor, except a visitor who comes with good, O Most Merciful.

He also wrote: In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful:

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger, His punishment, the evil of His servants, from the whisperings of the devils and their presence around me.

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all they shade, Lord of the seven earths and all they contain, Lord of the devils and of those whom they mislead.”

He (the narrator) added that there was something on the parchment that had become effaced, and I heard him say: “For sudden fright: the enemies of Allah have scattered, the protection of Allah stands firm”—and I think he also said—“and the enemy of Allah has been humbled.”

Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman ʿAbd Allah said: My father remarked, “Some of these words are from Abu al-Nadr.”
