1071 – ʿAbd Allah related to us; Abū Kāmil al-Jahdarī, Fuḍayl ibn al-Ḥusayn, related to us; Abū ʿAwānah related to us; from Hilāl ibn Khabbāb; from Qazaʿah, who said:
I saw Ibn ʿUmar—may Allah have mercy on him—wearing coarse garments (the narrator said: or perhaps they were simply rough). I said, “O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, I have brought you a soft robe of the kind woven in Khurāsān; it would delight me to see you wearing it, for the clothes you have on are quite coarse—indeed, rough.”
He replied, “Show it to me so that I may look at it.” He felt it with his hand and asked, “Is it silk?” I said, “No, it is cotton.” He said, “I am afraid that if I were to wear it I might become conceited and boastful, and Allah does not love every conceited boaster” (57:23).
