1056 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Yazīd narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn Maymūn informed us, from his father, who said:

When ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿĀmir was struck by the illness from which he eventually died, he sent for a number of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—among them ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar. When they arrived he said:

“ What you see has now befallen me, and I expect nothing but that death is near. What do you think my fate will be?”

They replied, “You used to give to the beggar, maintain ties of kinship, dig wells in the desolate stretches for the wayfarer, and you built the cistern at ʿArafah from which the pilgrims to the House of Allah drink. We have no doubt that you will be saved.”

All the while his gaze remained fixed on ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar, who kept silent. When Ibn ʿUmar delayed in speaking he asked him, “O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, why do you not speak?”

He answered, “When the earnings are pure, the spending is blessed—but it will all be returned to you, and then you will know.”
