1054 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAdawī narrated to us; Dāwūd ibn Abī al-Furāt informed me, from Abū Ghālib, the freedman of Khālid ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Qurashī, who said:
Ibn ʿUmar used to lodge with us in Mecca. He would spend part of the night in tahajjud (voluntary night prayer). On one occasion, just before dawn, he said to me, “Abū Ghālib, will you not rise to pray, even if you recite one-third of the Qur’an?” I replied, “Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, dawn is near; how could I possibly recite a third of the Qur’an now?” He answered, “Surah al-Ikhlāṣ—‘Say, He is Allah, the One’ (112:1)—is equal to one-third of the Qur’an.”
