1052 – ʿAbd Allah related to us; my father related to me; Yazid related to us; Mustalim ibn Saʿid al-Thaqafi informed us, from Khubayb ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman, from Nafiʿ:

Ibn ʿUmar once craved some grapes while he was ill, so I bought him a cluster for one dirham, brought it, and placed it in his hand. A beggar then arrived and stood at the door asking for alms. Ibn ʿUmar said, “Give it to him.” I replied, “At least eat some of it—taste it.” He insisted, “No, give it to him,” so I handed it over.

I then purchased it back from the beggar for a dirham, returned with it to Ibn ʿUmar, and put it in his hand. The beggar returned, and Ibn ʿUmar said, “Give it to him.” I said, “Taste it—eat some of it.” He repeated, “Give it to him,” and I did so.

Once more I bought it from him for a dirham, brought it to Ibn ʿUmar, and placed it in his hand. The beggar came back yet again, and Ibn ʿUmar told me, “Give it to him.” I said, “Eat some—taste it!” He said, “Give it to him,” so I handed it over and said, “Shame on you—are you not embarrassed, the third or the fourth time?” (I cannot be sure except that he said “the fourth,” and Yazid was uncertain.) He went on: “So I bought it from him for a dirham ⦗156⦘, left, then came back with it to him, and he finally ate it.”
