Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1050 – ʿAbd Allah related to us; my father related to me; Hushaym related to us; Mansur informed us, from Ibn Sirin, that a man once said to Ibn ʿUmar, “Shall I make some jawārish (a digestive preparation) for you?”

Ibn ʿUmar asked, “And what is jawārish?”

The man replied, “It is something you take whenever food sits heavily in your stomach; once you partake of it, life becomes easier.”

Ibn ʿUmar responded, “I have not eaten my fill of food for the past four months. It is not because I cannot afford it; rather, I have known a people who were satisfied on one occasion and hungry on another.”
