1041 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us; Abū Muʿāwiyah—meaning Shaybān—narrated from Hilāl—meaning al-Wazzān—from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, who reported that Abū Masʿūd al-Anṣārī, when speaking about the life of this world, said:

“Cling to it with all your insides, if you wish! By Allah, not a single dinar or dirham of it will accompany you into the Hereafter. You will leave it behind—upon the earth’s surface and within its bowels—just as those before you left it. Go on disputing over it as you are disputing now, and deceiving one another over it as you are now deceiving; yet it will bring ruin upon both your religion and your worldly life.”
