1039 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Shayban ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; he said: Abu Hilal narrated to us; he said: Jabir ibn ʿAmr, Abu al-Wazzaʿ, narrated to us; he said: Abu Burdah al-Aslami stated, “If one man had gold dinars in his lap and was handing them out, while another was engaged in the remembrance of Allah, the one remembering Allah would be superior.”

Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman ʿAbd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal—speaking about his father’s death—said, “He left behind less than a single dirham, in small pieces, and he told us, ‘Use it to expiate an oath for me; I think I may have broken it.’”
