Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

1032 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, who said:

“We were sitting with Saʿd when he fell silent for a moment. Then he said, ‘During that pause I uttered words better than everything the Euphrates and the Nile irrigate.’ He was asked, ‘What did you say?’ He replied, ‘I said: Subḥān Allah (Glory be to Allah), al-ḥamdu lillāh (all praise is due to Allah), lā ilāha illā Allah (there is no deity but Allah), and Allāhu akbar (Allah is the Greatest).’”
