1031 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah informed us, from Jaʿfar al-Khaṭamī, who said that his grandfather, ʿUmair ibn Ḥabīb—one of the Companions—left the following counsel to his sons:
“My dear sons, keep away from the company of the foolish, for sitting with them is a sickness. Whoever shows forbearance toward a fool is not belittled because of his patience; but the one who does not escape the small harm a fool causes will be forced to flee from the greater harm. Whoever endures what he dislikes will attain what he loves. And if anyone of you wishes to command the people to do what is right (al-maʿrūf) and forbid them from what is wrong (al-munkar), let him prepare himself to endure hurt, and let him be certain of the reward from Allah. Indeed, the one who trusts in the reward from Allah no longer feels the sting of harm.”
