1026 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said, “My father narrated to me, from Hashim ibn al-Qasim; Jarir narrated to us, from Abu al-Hasan ibn Khalid, from Abu ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he would walk through the army camp and proclaim:

‘Behold! Many a person keeps his garments dazzling white while staining his religion. Behold! Many a one shows honor to himself yet, in truth, humiliates it. Behold! Hurry to erase old misdeeds with fresh good deeds. For if any one of you were to sin so grievously that his offenses filled the space between heaven and earth, then performed a single good deed, that deed would rise above his sins until it overpowered them.’
