1025 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Hajjaj narrated to us; Hariz ibn ʿUthman, from the elders, from Abu Bahriyah, from Muʿadh ibn Jabal, said: “No child of Adam performs any deed that is more effective in rescuing him from Allah’s punishment than the remembrance of Allah.” They asked, “O Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman, not even striving in the path of Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He?” He replied, “Not even if he were to keep striking with his sword until it broke, for Allah—Glorified and Exalted be He—says in His Book: ‘And the remembrance of Allah is greater.’ [al-ʿAnkabut 45]”
١٠٢٥ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، حَدَّثَنَا حَرِيزُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، عَنِ الْمَشْيَخَةِ، عَنْ أَبِي بَحْرِيَّةَ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ قَالَ: مَا عَمِلَ آدَمِيٌّ عَمَلًا أَنْجَى لَهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ اللَّهِ مِنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ، قَالُوا: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ وَلَا الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ – Exalté soit-Il –، قَالَ: وَلَا إِلَى أَنْ يُضْرَبَ بِسَيْفِهِ حَتَّى يَنْقَطِعَ؛ لِأَنَّ اللَّهَ – Exalté soit-Il – يَقُولُ فِي كِتَابِهِ ﴿وَلَذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ﴾ [العنكبوت: ٤٥] "
