1024 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us. He said: “I heard Yazid ibn Abi Maryam say: I heard Abu Idris al-Khawlani say that Muʿadh ibn Jabal (may Allah have mercy on him) said, ‘You will sit with a people who will inevitably plunge into talk. When you see them grow heedless, turn with longing to your Lord—Glorified and Exalted is He—and present at that moment your earnest requests.’

Al-Walid added, ‘I mentioned this to ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Yazid ibn Jabir, and he said: Yes, Abu Talhah Hakim ibn Dinar narrated to me that they used to say, “The sign of a supplication that will be answered is that when you see the people in heedlessness, direct your longing to your Lord—Glorified and Exalted is He—and place before Him your petitions at that very moment.”’
