990 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAmr narrated to us; Ismaʿil—meaning al-ʿAbdi—narrated to us, from Abu al-Mutawakkil, that Abu Hurayrah owned a zanjiyya (an African bondwoman) who used to support them through her labor. One day he raised a whip against her and said, “Were it not for qiṣāṣ (retaliatory justice), I would have beaten you with this. Instead, I shall sell you to someone who will pay me your full price. Go—you are free for the sake of Allah, exalted is He.”
