Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbd Allāh reported to us; my father told us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us, from Zuhayr, from al-ʿAlāʾ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah—who related from the Prophet ﷺ:

“Do you know who the bankrupt person is?”

They answered, “In our view, Messenger of Allah, the bankrupt man is the one who has neither a dirham nor any possessions.”

He said, “The bankrupt one from my community is he who will appear on the Day of Resurrection with prayer, zakat, and fasting, yet he will also have reviled this person, slandered that one, consumed another’s wealth, and struck someone else. He will be made to sit, and each of those he wronged will take from his good deeds—this one from his good deeds, and that one from his good deeds. If his good deeds are exhausted before he has settled all that he owes, their sins will be taken from them and laid upon him, after which he will be cast into the Fire.”
