967 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Harun narrated to us; Siyar narrated to us; Jaʿfar narrated, from ʿAli ibn Zayd al-Qurashi, from Abu ʿUthman al-Nahdi, who said:
“It reached me that Abu Hurayrah related the report: ‘Indeed Allah—glorified and exalted is He—records for the believer a single good deed as one thousand thousand good deeds.’
So that very year I set out for Hajj—though I had not intended to perform it—until I met Abu Hurayrah. I said to him, ‘I have been told that you said: Allah—glorified and exalted is He—records for the believer, for one good deed, one thousand thousand good deeds.’
He replied, ‘That is not how I said it; the person who reported it from me did not preserve it accurately.’
I asked, ‘Then how did you say it?’
He answered, ‘Two thousand thousand good deeds.’
Then he added, ‘Do you not find this in the Book of Allah—glorified and exalted is He?’
I said, ‘Where?’
He recited:
“Who is it that will lend to Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:245).
‘And “many” from Allah,’ he continued, ‘is more than two million—nay, more than two million upon two million—good deeds.’
