Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

966 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Harun ibn Abd Allah narrated to us; Siyar ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Abu ʿImran al-Jawni narrated, from Abu Hurayrah, who said:

Allah will bring the servant close on the Day of Resurrection, spread His shelter over him, and screen him from all of creation. Within that privacy He will hand him his record and say, “O son of Adam, read your book.”

When the servant comes to a good deed, his face grows bright and his heart rejoices. Allah—glorified and exalted is He—will ask, “Do you recognize it, My servant?” He will reply, “Yes, my Lord, I recognize it.” He will say, “I have accepted it from you.” Thereupon the servant falls in prostration.

Then He says, “Raise your head, O son of Adam, and continue through your book.” When he reaches a sin, his face darkens and his heart quakes. Allah—glorified and exalted is He—will ask, “Do you recognize it, My servant?” He will answer, “Yes, my Lord, I recognize it.” He will say, “I have forgiven it for you.”

Thus, whenever he encounters an accepted good deed he prostrates, and whenever he encounters a forgiven sin he prostrates, and none of creation sees anything of him except prostration—until the creatures begin calling out to one another, “Glad tidings for this servant; he has never disobeyed Allah at all!” Yet they do not know what has passed between him and Allah concerning that which He made him stand before.
