963 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; al-Hasan ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Abi ʿUthman narrated to us. He said: ʿAli—meaning Ibn Fudayl—was once in the company of Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah. Sufyan began recounting a hadith that mentioned the Fire, while ʿAli was holding a slip of paper with something tied to it. At this, ʿAli gasped loudly, collapsed, and hurled the paper away—or it slipped from his hand. Sufyan turned to him and said, “Had I known you were here, I would not have narrated it.” ʿAli did not regain consciousness until Allah willed.
