961 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; al-Hasan ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar narrated to us, from Fuḍayl:
They once bought barley for a single dinar—this was during a time of steep prices. Umm ʿAli said to Fuḍayl, “Set it aside so that each person receives two small loaves.” Yet he would keep one loaf and give the other away in charity, until emptiness all but overtook him—or, indeed, a share of that hunger did strike him. Fuḍayl said, “Even then he never took back what had already been given away, though hunger had overtaken him, right up until we had reached the time of the ʿIshaʾ prayer.”
