959 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; al-Hasan ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz narrated to us, who said: I heard Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿUmar, from Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ, who said: “I said to ʿAlī—meaning his son—‘If only you would help us with our livelihood.’ He thereupon picked up a qiffah (large basket) and went off to the market to earn a wage by carrying loads. A man came and informed me, so I followed him, brought him back, and said, ‘My son, this is not what I intended—or rather, I did not intend all of this.’”
