Al-'UqubatIbn Abi al-Dunya

359 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, saying: Isḥāq ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us, saying: Jarīr narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, who said:

“Moses, peace be upon him, had a pavilion six hundred cubits across in which he would converse privately with his Lord. The Fire of the Offering used to descend, and the two sons of Aaron were the ones who kindled the fire. One night they rose and entered the pavilion but could not see the fire. They realized that the fire had come down but had not found them, so they went back, re-entered the pavilion, took some fire, and lit it themselves. Then the Fire of the Offering came and consumed them. Aaron hurried to extinguish it, but Moses, peace be upon him, said, ‘Leave your Lord to do as He wills,’ and they waited until it subsided. Then revelation came to Moses, peace be upon him: ‘This is how I deal with My devoted servant when he disobeys Me—so what of My enemy?’”
